Evaluation of Solar Energy Powered Seawater Desalination Processes: A Review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Solar energy, amongst all renewable energies, has attracted inexhaustible attention over the world as a supplier of sustainable energy. The energy requirement major seawater desalination processes such multistage flash (MSF), multi-effect distillation (MED) and reverse osmosis (RO) are fulfilled by burning fossil fuels, which impact environment significantly due to emission greenhouse gases. integration solar systems into is an attractive alternative solution fuels. This study aims (i) assess progress including concentrated power (CSP) photovoltaic (PV) both thermal membrane MSF, MED, RO (ii) evaluate economic considerations associated challenges with recommendations for further improvements. Thus, several studies on different combination reviewed analysed concerning specific consumption freshwater production cost. It observed that although have potential reducing carbon footprint significantly, cost water still favours use Further research development required make their in economically viable. Alternatively, tax fuels may persuade industries adopt solar.

Environmental life cycle assessment of seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant powered by renewable energy

This paper evaluates life cycle Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of a Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant and assesses its performance under three power supply scenarios. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis is conducted for a plant located in Perth, Western Australia (WA). Input and output flows of SWRO plant are based on literature and Perth desalination plants. The Simapro Aus...

Seawater desalination using renewable energy sources

The origin and continuation of mankind is based on water. Water is one of the most abundant resources on earth, covering three-fourths of the planet’s surface. However, about 97% of the earth’s water is salt water in the oceans, and a tiny 3% is fresh water. This small percentage of the earth’s water—which supplies most of human and animal needs—exists in ground water, lakes and rivers. The onl...

Solar-powered Desalination in a Remote Town in South Australia

Abstract: Coober Pedy is a remote town in South Australia with abundant solar radiation and scarce and low quality water, where a reverse osmosis plant has been operating since 1967. This paper evaluates the feasibility of powering the plant with solar or photovoltaic (PV) panels whilst avoiding energy storage in batteries. Pilot tests were performed in October 2005 with a small scale PV-powere...

Energy consumption and water production cost of conventional and renewable-energy-powered desalination processes

Desalination technologies improve water quality, greatly reduce water shortage problems, and improve quality of life and economic status. Two main technologies are currently used in water desalination: thermal (phase-change) processes and membrane processes. The primary thermal distillation processes include multistage flash distillation (MSF), multi-effect distillation (MED), and vapor compres...
